Eco-Friendly Heart

This funky pendant was made from plastic bottles. I cut the shapes out by hand with scissors. I used to think heart jewelry was corny, but I think it can be funky when using different materials. How cool a Valentines gift would this be?!

Monday, December 29, 2008

I hope everyone is enjoying the holidays! I'm back to work and I'm going to be making things with a Valentines Day theme. I will post them as soon as they are finished.

Water Bottle Series

I've been working with water bottles this week. I really like the clear, yet textured look. They are super funky but really simple! These are my very first pendants too. Definitely more to come from this material.

New Selling Venue!

I'm now selling on another handmade venue! I just heard of it. It's called Art Fire. It's a fairly new site, but it offers some great deals for artists selling their work. The first 5,000 people to sign up get locked in at 7.00/month. That 7.00 gets you unlimited listing, selling 10 pics and a lot more! I think the normal price is 20.00/month which is still good. There are no listing or selling fees!! Give it a try! I am. Click on the link above!

ArtworkbyKD

My show at Vestal High School yesterday was awesome! I met a lot of really great people and got lots of positive feedback on my work. I look foward to a few weeks of building up my inventory, creating new designs and concentrating on my etsy store. March will be here before I know it! I hope to take part in the BU show March 29th 2009. That will be the start of my 2009 season.

I'd love to hear of designs you'd like to see!

Last Show of 2008...

This Sunday December 7th is my last show of 2008. It's at Vestal High School in Vestal, NY from 10am until 4pm. This season really flew by! Shows start up again in April, however I hope to do public selling at least once a month January-March.

So stop by Vestal High School if you're in the area. It'll be a great place to get your Christmas shopping done!

Aluminum Can Bracelets...

Aluminum cans make really funky bracelets! I've been cutting aluminum circles by hand and weaving them through wire. The result is a modern, earth friendly accessory! They are not sharp at all. They are actually really flexible and comfy.

Eco Ornaments...

I've made some fun ornaments out of plastic bottle bottoms! I'm usually only able to get use out of the body of a bottle. Now I'm starting to think harder in order to use up more of it. These ornaments look really neat when light shines through them. The string is also recycled. I only wish I could have been making eco ornaments before the Christmas season. Oh well, next year I'll be more prepared.

On black Friday (November 28th) I will be selling at the Artist's Market in The Steamtown Mall. This takes place on the second floor in front of Steve and Barry's. The Artist's Market is put on by a co-op called The Star Gallery which is right next door to Steve and Barry's. There will be around 20 artists attending. I will be there from 11am until the evening.

Commission for a Dietitian...

I was recently asked to do a special order by a registered dietitian who does research at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. She wanted to give her study subjects a pair of fruit based earrings as a reminder of her (and the nutrition study) and also as a thank you. She wanted earrings based on their different personalities, so I was to come up with a variety. I decided on 2 kinds, one of them a little funky, and the other a little more simple. The simpler ones were my locket earrings made from recycled yogurt containers and recycled aluminum cans. The funkier ones were made from recycled plastic, recycled newspaper and tissue paper.

Life Magazine...

Throughout my life I've always been a 're user' and a 'recycler' (probably borderline pack rat too). About 10 years ago I came in contact with a bunch of Life magazines from the early 1950s. I've held onto them, and I finally found a use for them! Although I'm only using the issues I have doubles of...Guess I can't let go of them yet. I'm really pleased with this series. I'm using recycled plastic for the base, tissue paper for that funky 'pop' of color, and of course the vintage Life magazine text.

Recycled Plastic Necklace...

I've recently made my first necklace! I'm pretty excited about it too! I used 3 layers of recycled plastic. It's really comfy and attractive! Fishing line was used as the string, so it does not take away from the pendant and it fits into my funky style. I also learned how to make a secure knot (googled it!)! I will definitely have more necklaces soon! I'm also going to be selling pendants for those who already have a favorite chain. Let me know what you think! Would you wear this?

First Friday in Bingahmton, NY...

I'm so excited to be a featured artist this Friday at L'aveggio Roasteria in Binghamton, NY! This is my first 'real' art gig since graduating from college. I feel proud that I'm making a name for myself as an artist. Throughout college I always struggled with the feelings of inadequacy. The pettiness and seriousness at times made me feel out of place. Another annoyance was when I told people what I was studying in college they looked at me as if I were majoring in pie throwing. Now when I explain my work I'm often congratulated! It's weird! I'm proud to be starting my career from the ground up, making contacts, networking, creating, reusing, I finally feel like myself.
